Where to go in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The booming modern metropolis and Malaysian capital offers a host of sights and activities:

1. Suria KLCC - The shopping mall at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers has big brands such as Diesel, Prada, Cartier, Ferragamo, as well as something Malaysian such as Pucuk Rebung on the 3rd floor, which models itself as a heritage store and art gallery, selling local crafts. There are also severa; home-decoration stores that offer more unusal (and Malaysian) goods. There are also good restaurants and an art Gallery Galeri Petronas.

2. Petronas Twin Towers - As well as the shopping mall. the towers themselves are the symbol of the city and remain impressive, particularly at night. Try crossing the sky bridge that links the towers on the 41st and 42nd floors, but for my money the best view of the structures comes from the far side of KLCC Park, a 20-hectare green space downtown. For the record the 88-storey twin towers where the tallest building in the world until 2003 (when Taipei 101 took the crown).

3. Batu Caves - On the outskirts to the north of the city, the Batu Caves are one of its holiest Hindu shrines. You can reach the caves via 272 steps with each one numbered to mark your journey. Watch out for the macaques who might try and take food from the unwary. Inside there are two main caves, 100 metres high. Try and time your visit around the annual Thaipusam festival. Hindu devotees make daily offerings at the shrines.

4. Zouk - If you want to go clubbing in KL, look no further than Zouk, an offshoot of the famous Singapore venue. Look out for the club on Jalan Ampang, in fact it's not just one club but it is divided into four individual clubs.

5. Aquaria -In the basement of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, you will find this aquarium with an impressive collection of local fish,, reptiles and insect species. Don't miss out on the 90-metre underwater moving walkaway with the grey nurse sharks and Stingrays. Well worth a visit.

6. Asian Hertitage Row - A line of once abandoned pre-war houses runs along Jalan Dorausamy. Check out the local food offerings from a series off open-air hawker stalls serving Malaysian dishes.

7. Chinatown - You can try one of the several Peranakan establishments, which blend Chinese and Malay ingredients. Try finding the Old China Cafe, which is a Peranakan resturant in a beautifully preseved period building. You will also find stalls selling jeans, fruits, various handbags and those essential gifts - statues of the Twin Towers.

8. Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix / SuperGT Championship / A1 Grand Prix / Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race - Every year the city plays host to a number of motor racing events. However remember the Sepang Circuit is an hout outside of the city, near to the KL international airport.

9. Lake Gardens - at the foot of the KL Tower, there is a large collection of parks known as Lake Gardens. There's a butterfly parrk, an orchid garden and the bird park, which has what it calls the world's largest walk in, free flight aviary.

Enjoy the best that KL has to offer!!!
